Biography
After studying Nuclear Energy Physics at Vilnius University, Konstantinas Zakalskis built his career in photonics, spending more than a decade helping bring advanced laser and optical technologies to market. Throughout his career, he has worked at the intersection of science, engineering, and business, combining technical expertise with strategic business development. As Head of Growth at SPhotonix, he is focused on commercializing laser-written optics and permanent 5D optical data storage technologies through partnerships with industry and research organizations. His interests lie in translating breakthrough photonics research into real-world applications that address emerging technological challenges.
Founded on more than three decades of pioneering research in light–matter interaction, SPhotonix develops laser-written technologies for advanced polarization optics and permanent 5D optical data storage. By precisely modifying the internal structure of fused silica with femtosecond lasers, the company creates optical components with exceptional durability, precision, and laser damage resistance, while enabling entirely new approaches to storing digital information.
SPhotonix’s laser-written optics provide innovative solutions for applications ranging from microscopy and high-power laser systems to advanced beam shaping and polarization control. The company’s technology has already enabled several world firsts, including the first-ever preservation of a video game in a 5D memory crystal in collaboration with GOG, the first preservation of the human genome in a 5D memory crystal, and the first capture of humanity’s oldest art form for a space mission.
